Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
