A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
